Wallpaper: A Beginner’s Guide to Installation and Removal

Wallpaper is a versatile and popular choice for adding texture, pattern, and personality to any room. Whether you’re looking to create a bold accent wall or transform an entire space, understanding the basics of  installation and removal is essential.

And if you’re a beginner in decorating world, fear not! In this guide, we will walk you through the process of  installation and removal, providing you with the knowledge and tips to achieve beautiful results and make changes when desired.

Part 1: Wallpaper Installation

Prepare the Wall

Before installing wallpaper, it’s crucial to prepare the wall properly. Start by cleaning the surface to remove any dirt, dust, or grease. Repair any imperfections such as cracks or holes, and ensure the wall is smooth and even. Applying a primer can improve the adhesion of the wallpaper and help achieve a flawless finish.

Measure and Cut

Measure the height and width of your walls, allowing a few extra inches for trimming. Carefully cut the wallpaper into strips of the appropriate length, aligning the pattern if necessary. Use a sharp utility knife and a straightedge for clean, precise cuts.

Apply Paste or Pre-pasted 

Depending on the type of wallpaper you have, you’ll need to apply paste or use pre-pasted wallpaper. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific adhesive requirements. For wallpaper paste, use a roller or brush to apply the adhesive evenly to the back of the wallpaper. For pre-pasted wallpaper, activate the paste by wetting the wallpaper according to the instructions.

Hang It Up

Starting from the top, align the first strip of wallpaper with the plumb line or level. Smooth it out from the centre to the edges, removing any air bubbles or wrinkles with a brush or a soft, clean cloth. Continue hanging subsequent strips, ensuring a proper pattern match and aligning the edges tightly.

Trim and Finish

Once all the strips are in place, use a sharp knife to trim the excess along the ceiling, baseboards, and corners. Gently press the edges to ensure a tight fit. Next, allow it to dry thoroughly before moving furniture back into the room or applying any additional treatments.

Part 2: Removal

Prepare the Room

Before removing, prepare the room by removing furniture and protecting the floor and adjacent surfaces. Cover electrical outlets and switches with masking tape to avoid water or steam damage.

Test for Strippable 

If you’re lucky, your wallpaper may be strippable, which means it can be peeled off easily. Start by finding a loose corner and gently pulling the wallpaper downward at a 45-degree angle. If it comes off in large sheets, you have strippable wallpaper. Simply continue peeling it off until the entire wall is clear.

Use a Steamer

For non-strippable wallpaper or stubborn adhesive, a steamer can be an effective tool. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using the steamer, which usually involves applying steam to the wallpaper and allowing it to soften the adhesive. Once the wallpaper is adequately steamed, use a scraper or putty knife to gently remove the softened remains.

Remove Adhesive Residue

After the wallpaper is removed, there may be some adhesive residue left on the wall. Use a mixture of warm water and mild detergent or wallpaper remover solution to clean the wall, removing any remaining residue. Allow the wall to dry completely before applying new wallpaper or any other treatments.
